Mystery in his mastery: Dice-K’s results tough to peg

If it’s bottom-line results that matter to you with baseball,
then Daisuke Matsuzaka [stats] has to be on your short list
of American League Cy Young Award candidates.

If you care about how one pitcher can manufacture a less impressive
10-1 record and 2.65 ERA than Matsuzaka, then you understand how his
start yesterday featured everything you love and hate about Matsuzaka's
2008 season.

The right-hander needed 115 pitches to throw just six innings and
he allowed five walks to one of the league’s least-disciplined lineups,
an effort almost mind-boggling in its inefficiency.

And yet, there is the result: no runs allowed, only four hits,
seven strikeouts. Batters are 0-for-11 on the season with the bases
loaded against Matsuzaka (including one such
situation yesterday) and 0-for-13 dating back to last year.

“For me, I think what matters is that the team gets the win - also,
going five or six innings without any earned runs isn’t that bad, is it?”
Matsuzaka said. “I thought that my strength out there was good today
and with the break starting tomorrow, I probably could have stayed
in there longer. But going deep into the game is up to me,
so in the second half I’m going to work hard to get those quality starts.”

松阪說：「對我而言，我認為重要的是球隊能贏球；
               而且，如果我能投五局或六局沒有任何失分，也是不錯，不是嗎？」

「我認為今天我已盡力去投，這場是上半季結束，我希望未來我可以投更久，
   但是能否投更久的局數是由我自己決定，  在下半季，我將更努力去完成每次的優質先發。」

Consistency, pitch efficiency - these are words not often associated
with Matsuzaka’s game.

穩定一致、投球效率..等，這些字眼似乎跟松阪的比賽無關。

“The good news is he gets out of it,” manager Terry Francona said.
“There’s some frustration at times, which I think he probably has,
too, because his stuff is so good and he has the ability to get outs.
When he locates, he’s as good as there is.”

紅襪總教練粉科南說：「好消息是--他完成了(度過了)，
雖然有時候總會遇到一點挫折，我也認為他可能會遇到，但是因為他的球威夠，
有能力去處理危機讓打者出局，因此即使當他遇到那樣狀況時，他都是一樣的好。」

No surprise, Matsuzaka said he did not feel particularly sharp.

不意外地，松阪說他不覺得今天狀況有特別的好。

“I didn’t have that good feeling at all today,” he said.
“Even before the game started, I knew I didn’t have that feel,
and I knew it would be a game where I'd have to make adjustments
during the game.”

松阪說：「我覺得我今天的感覺不太好，其實在這場比賽之前，
我就已經感覺不太對勁，因此我在比賽過程中必須去做一些調整。」

Making adjustments, and making them successfully, has not been
a problem for Matsuzaka. Despite throwing the longest six-inning
scoreless stint for the Sox since Matt Clement needed 116 pitches for
a six-inning outing against the Orioles in September 2005, Matsuzaka did
his bottom-line job: He has allowed just one run in his last four
starts combined.

「做了一些調整，且讓調整順利達成目標」，這對於松阪來講並不是問題。

Yet, there has been nothing smooth or pretty about it. In a 7 1/3
inning scoreless stint against the Twins, Matsuzaka walked three
batters and spread out six hits.

“He did a better job in his last outing,” Francona said.
“When you start stringing starts together, that's a great sign for us.”
