Sox place Matsuzaka on DL with shoulder strain
09:31 PM EDT on Wednesday, April 15, 2009
By JOE McDONALD / Journal Sports Writer

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Red Sox Wednesday placed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on
the 15-day disabled list because of a mild right-shoulder strain and called
up reliever Hunter Jones from Pawtucket to fill his roster spot.

Francona said that Matsuzaka is not injured, but is feeling the effects of
pitching in the World Baseball Classic for Japan. He will be examined by team
physician Dr. Thomas Gill on Friday in Boston before a rehab program is put
into place.

Despite the soreness, Matsuzaka was playing long toss Wednesday morning at
Oakland Coliseum to test a stiff neck, too.

Matsuzaka, lasted only one inning and allowed five runs on five hits against
Oakland on Tuesday night in a game the Sox lost to the Athletics in 12
innings, 6-5. Despite suffering from arm fatigue, he was not happy that he
was removed from the game after throwing only 43 pitches (22 strikes).

Matsuzaka was not with the Sox during spring training due to the World
Baseball Classic. He was named the MVP of the tourney after going 3-0 with a
2.45 ERA in three starts for Japan. He pitched a total 1462/3 innings as
Japan retained  its title.

According to Red Sox manager Terry Francona, a couple of days ago Matsuzaka
said  he was feeling “general soreness or fatigue” in the back of his
shoulder. There was some thought to pushing him back a start if he wasn’t
healthy enough to pitch, but after their conversation in Anaheim, Francona
believed everyone was on the same page.

“We thought we talked it through pretty good in Anaheim, and he came out
tonight and didn’t have a whole lot,” Francona said. “We’ll re-evaluate
him in the morning ... We talked to him the other day about this because we
knew he was fatigued. He came out of the WBC and felt like he probably ramped
up too quick. Those are the things we worry about. Then he threw his bullpen
[in Anaheim] and assured us he was fine.”

It was his worst outing since June 21, 2008, against the Cardinals, when he
surrendered seven runs on six hits with three walks, facing nine batters in
the first inning and only three in the second.

On Tuesday night, it was evident early that he wasn’t right.
Matsuzaka spoke with Francona after the game and told his manager: “
Personally, I think I’m fine.”
Now he’s on the DL.

“Contrary to what Daisuke said [Tuesday] night, he understands it,” said
Francona. “I think sometimes guys say some things when they’re trying to
compete. We just want him to be able to be Daisuke and not a part of Daisuke.
After Matsuzaka left the manager’s office Wednesday morning, he had a
completely different outlook on the situation.
“It’s still early in the season, so I want to take this in a positive light,
” he said. “I respect and appreciate the ballclub’s decision to give me
time to deal with my fatigue, and I’m going to do everything I can to get
back to where I need to be as soon as possible. I’m glad it’s early, and
the only thing I can do is move forward.”

Francona said he’s going to wait to announce who will start in Dice-K’s
place on Monday. Not only is he dealing with that situation, the manager is
also dealing with Josh Beckett’s six-game suspension. Francona does not know
when the club’s appeal will be heard on Beckett.

Reliever Justin Masterson will certainly be an option for the Red Sox because
he’s stretched out.

“I’m ready for anything,” said the always-upbeat Masterson.
When Matsuzaka returned from the WBC as the tourney’s MVP, the Red Sox had
no indication there was anything wrong with him. The Sox did have someone
with him during Matsuzaka’s warmup for the WBC.
"That’s hard to tell,” said Francona. “He’s coming off a game where he’
s pitching his heart out with a lot of emotion, and then you come back to a
spring-training game.”
