BOSTON -- Remember that first row of every classroom -- the empty one that no one wanted to sit in?
That's exactly what the Red Sox's bullpen looked like after each of the past two games against St. Louis.

With a one-inning start from Daisuke Matsuzaka on Saturday and a 13-inning contest on Sunday,
Boston's bullpen pitched a whopping 13 2/3 innings over the past two days. With Josh Beckett taking
the hill on Monday against Arizona, the Sox will look to rest their 'pen
after an exhausting weekend series with the Cardinals.
因為星期六紅襪先發松阪僅先發短短1局，以及星期日跟紅雀打的13局延長賽，
紅襪的牛棚在過去兩天裡頭，已經投了13.2局。

"Everyone's icing, for the most part," said Javier Lopez, who pitched two innings on Saturday
and two-thirds of an inning on Sunday. "[Overusing your bullpen is]
not something you want to do, but that's the way it is."

Craig Hansen also pitched in both games. Between Hansen and Lopez, the two pitched 5 1/3 innings
over the past two days, allowing just one run on five hits.
"I think I'm stating the obvious, but we had eight innings out of our bullpen [on Saturday],"
manager Terry Francona said. "This isn't what you draw up."
Hansen在這兩場比賽也連續出賽，Hanse以及肉配汁在這兩天已經投了5.1局，共被打五支安打，僅丟掉一分。

The bullpen was the strength of the team throughout its series with the Cardinals.
But that doesn't mean the crew isn't a bit fatigued after having been called on for two long stints.
Still, Francona said he hopes they all keep begging for the ball.
"I hope that when that phone rings, they all want it to ring and it to be [for] them," he said.
"And then when they're called upon, they want to get in. Games like this can really springboard that."
在這次對紅雀的系列戰中，牛棚是兩隊勝負的關鍵。但是這也意味著在這兩天持久戰之後，兩隊球員有一點疲累。
不過粉柯南仍希望他們保持對上場的活力與期待。

Not every game is as taxing on a bullpen as the past two were for the Sox, and Lopez said Monday
might be the day when the relief corps gets a chance to rest. That's because Beckett takes the hill, a starter
who teammates depend on going deep into contests every outing.
"We've got Beckett on the mound, he's our horse," Lopez said. "He's always been our horse.
So I'm sure he's going to come out and attack the Diamondbacks,
and hopefully he goes deep into the game. We should be OK."

Pitching matchup
BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (7-4, 3.87 ERA)
Beckett looks for his third win of the month and his first three-game winning streak this season. Beckett held the Reds scoreless over seven innings on June 15 at Great American Ball Park, allowing just six hits while fanning six and walking two. Beckett makes this start on seven days' rest after the Red Sox built in a break for him simply for maintenance reasons. Beckett earned a win against the D-backs last June, allowing two runs over eight innings. In his career against Arizona, Beckett is 1-3 with a 5.65 ERA.
ARI: RHP Dan Haren (7-4, 3.26 ERA)
Haren had his finest outing of the year Wednesday night against the A's at Chase Field. The right-hander held his former team to just one run on four hits over seven innings. Haren threw more cut fastballs than he normally does, in part because he figured the A's were more familiar with his repertoire than other teams. He began using the cut fastball in Spring Training but got away from it early in the season. It's an important pitch for him, because it gives him something to throw rather than just a straight fastball when he falls behind in the count 1-0 or 2-0.
Sox stuff
The Red Sox avoided their first home sweep of the season on Sunday since a five-game series against the Yankees from Aug. 18-21, 2006. ... The walk-off win was Boston's third this season, and first since April 30 against Toronto. ... Manny Delcarmen has worked 11 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in his past 10 outings. He has a 0.96 ERA in his past 17 games.
